Gavilán Rayna Russom has built a visionary career in music that links experimental and club sounds. In high school she began DJing dance parties and producing home recordings of drones and feedback. In the early 2000’s she moved from distributing small batches of home recorded experimental tapes as Child and Paper Eyes to releasing several acclaimed and influential albums on DFA Records including The Days of Mars, Black Meteoric Star and The Crystal Ark. During her years with DFA she made significant contributions to the label’s most well-known act LCD Soundsystem, touring with the band from 2009 - 2018. Leaving DFA in 2014, Rayna released a stream of experimental club EPs under the alias Gavin Russom on labels such as LIES, Curle and LuxRec. While mesmerizing dancefloors with these releases Rayna honed her DJ skills through a residency at Brooklyn’s Bossa Nova Civic Club and tours throughout the US and Europe. These years also saw Rayna nurturing her experimental side through live ambient performances as well as productions like Hail of Arrows, released by Ecstatic Recordings in 2014. 2019’s The Envoy, also released by Ecstatic, brought Rayna’s previous projects together and featured guest appearances from Cosey Fanni Tutti and Peter Zummo. In 2020 Rayna founded her own label Voluminous Arts. As well as releasing a prolific catalog of recorded music and putting on events it has become a community resource hub for trans artists experimenting with electronic music and sound.
